DESCRIPTION: Cal Poly Humboldt invites applicants for an academic year tenure-track faculty position in Child Development.

RANK, SALARY AND BENEFITS: We seek to fill this position at the Assistant Professor rank; however, rank and salary are dependent on the appointee's qualifications and experience. PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS: An earned Ph.D. or equivalent in Child Development or Early Childhood Education or related field from an accredited college or university is required at the time of appointment. ABD will be considered. If ABD, degree requirements must be completed by start of appointment.
The successful candidate must demonstrate the following:
Ability, experience, and/or interest in preparing individuals to function effectively in culturally and ethnically diverse communities;
Ability, experience, and/or interest in taking a multigenerational perspective;
Ability, experience, and/or interest in promoting and fostering a learning environment that is supportive of individuals from diverse backgrounds;
Ability, experience, and/or interest in engaging students in research and scholarly activity;
Ability, experience, and/or interest in using a variety of methodologies that are learner-centered and activity-oriented;
Ability, experience, and/or interest in teaching a broad range of courses (introductory survey courses, senior capstone courses, etc.);
Ability, experience, and/or interests in virtual teaching and learning;
Direct experience working with young children (0-8) and their families; and
Ability, experience, and/or interest in an inclusive classroom.
Preferred qualifications for this position include:
Ability and experience with a variety of assessments of young children;
Knowledge and experience of National standards of practice and state guidelines concerning young children (e.g., National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), Transitional Kindergarten (TK)/Universal Prekindergarten (UPK), etc.);
Ability, experience, and/or interest in trauma-informed practices with students, young children, and their families;
Knowledge, experience, and interest in collaborating with a variety of professionals and colleagues on local, state, national, and/or international levels;
Experience with American Indian Education; and
Experience with diverse populations.
Working in the state of California is a condition of employment for this position. Even if part or all of an employee's assignment can be performed remotely, the employee must maintain a permanent residence in the state of California. PROFESSIONAL DUTIES: Candidates should be committed to teaching excellence and building a strong research record. Instructional assignments may include Child Growth and Development, Observation and Assessment, Theories, Early Childhood Curriculum, Language and Literacy, and Early Childhood Practica. Instructional assignments will be consistent with the programmatic needs of the department and students.
The primary professional responsibilities of instructional faculty members are: teaching, research, scholarship, and creative activity; and service to the University, professional and to the community. These responsibilities include: advising students, participation in campus and system-wide communities, maintaining office hours, working collaboratively and productively with colleagues, and participation in traditional academic functions. Probationary faculty are typically provided ongoing mentorship to be a successful member of the faculty. During the first two years of the probationary period, teaching responsibilities will be reduced by approximately one course each semester. The reduced teaching load supports the establishment of research, scholarship and/or creative activities required for retention, tenure, and promotion.

Faculty collaboratively work as a department team, cooperating with the teachers in the Child Development Lab and engaging students in research and department work.
GENERAL INFORMATION: The Child Development department offers various programs-- two majors: (1) Child Development and Family Relationships (CDFR) and (2) Liberal Studies Child Development/Elementary Education (LSCE) and four minors: (1) Early Childhood Development, (2) Family Studies, (3) ASL and Special Populations, and (4) American Indian Education. The CDFR has three concentrations- Teaching, Child and Family Services, and Specialized Studies. LSCE is a subject matter-approved program for students entering credential programs. Additionally, Liberal Studies Child Development Special Education Integrated Program (LSCD SPED ITEP) will be available in the fall of 2023, allowing students to complete credentials in 4 years. The department has a strong academic advising program, where students and faculty work closely together; majors individualize their study plans. Our students enrich their learning through engaging in the Child Development Lab (CDL), a NAEYC-accredited preschool. Cal Poly Humboldt sits on the traditional homelands of the Wiyot people in what is currently called Arcata, CA. The Wiyot people call the area Goudi'ni (over in the woods). The Cal Poly Humboldt campus in Northern California is in close proximity to several thriving Native American tribes and communities. Humboldt currently has the largest percentage of Native American students in the CSU system and has over 30 Native American faculty and staff many from local area California Indian tribes. Humboldt is home to a number of leading Native American programs including the Indian Tribal Education and Personnel Program (ITEPP) and the Indian Natural Resource, Science and Engineering Program (INRSEP). There are also many opportunities at Humboldt to conduct research, teaching and community work on Native American history and cultures in Special Collections at the Cal Poly Humboldt library. The Humboldt Room in the Library has fantastic resources for tribally focused archive materials from the region.
